Note: The starting monthly salary is at the minimum rate of pay advertised above.Shift Work: All applicants must be available to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill immediate Permanent Full-Time, Direct Care vacancies. This list may also be used to fill future Temporary Full-Time and Temporary Part-Time vacancies, some of which are for Non Direct patient care.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Hawaii State Hospital is the only acute care hospital in Hawaii dedicated solely to serving adults with serious mental illness. The hospital provides comprehensive psychiatric assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to individuals suffering from brain, medical and behavioral disorders who are primarily court ordered. Many of the patients frequently exhibit extreme hostility (which may include violent behavior to others or themselves), may be confused, combative or are resistant to services, possibly because they have been repeatedly referred to or compelled to accept agency services, have multiple and/or severe psychological, mental, physical and environmental problems or have become the focus of notoriety and/or intense public scrutiny. Work may involve dealing with violent outbursts, physical or verbal threats and assaults, and physically restraining patients.
Performs a variety of nursing support tasks for mentally ill patients/inmates in a health facility; and other related duties as assigned. Entry level employees are provided specific and detailed instructions; close guidance in performing tasks; and receive close and frequent review of work performed.
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
General Experience: No experience required.
Applicants must possess knowledge of personal hygiene and bodily care; and the ability to read, write, speak and understand simple sentences in English; follow oral and written instructions precisely; get along well with others; acquire and demonstrate an attitude of respect toward patients with a variety of disabilities; retain emotional stability despite emotional and physical pressures; develop an appreciation of nursing and medical ethics. Applicants must also possess patience, tact, an even temperament in meeting and dealing with others, and productive work habits.
Physical Requirements: All applicants must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the position, effectively and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation. The general types of physical abilities involved include:
Sensory: Read typewritten and/or handwritten notes in patient charts; observe changes in patient skin color; observe patients participating in recreational activities; hear through a stethoscope to measure patient's blood pressure.
Coordination and Dexterity: Assist patients with personal care activities (e.g., bathing, dressing, toileting, etc.).
Strength and Stamina: Lift, assist, and transfer patients; transport patients; and subdue uncontrolled patients.
Mobility: Chase runaway patients; move freely throughout the work setting; and respond to emergency situations quickly.
License: Some positions require possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
